Further reading:-

A special issue of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society magazine (issue No. 146) has been published entitled Harrogate Gas Works: Its railways and other transport systems. It is written by Martin P F Hallows and David H Smith. It contains a good selection of photographs along with some superb drawings of all of the locomotives and rolling stock. This highly recommended publication can be obtained through the Narrow Gauge Railway Society, and a limited number of copies of the book have been on sale at Alston station shop recently.

NGRS Books featuring Barber are available from STRPS at £7.95 including postage and packing. All profits to the BARBER Restoration Appeal.

Other Thomas Green locomotives in existence:-

The South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society is grateful to John Browning, of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia who has provided information about two narrow gauge steam locomotives, built by Thomas Green, which are still in existence in Australia, these are:-

No. 132, built to 3 foot 6 inch gauge in 1888, which is an 0-4-0 well tank locomotive, preserved by Margaret River Rotary Club, in Western Australia.

No.  219, built to 2 foot gauge in 1895, which is an 0-4-2 saddle tank locomotive, preserved by Graeme Harding, in Victoria.

The South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society is pleased to announce a project aimed at returning the former Harrogate Gas Works locomotive back to working condition. The following pages provide a history of this iconic locomotive, some idea of the extent of the project being undertaken and details of the appeal aimed at raising the £100,000 needed to fund the work.

We would like to thank the Narrow Gauge Railway Society, Humphrey Household, Kathleen Rosewarne/Ian Barton, and Narrow Gauge World & NG Modelling Magazine for allowing us to use the photographs and text used in the following pages, and also our member and former web-master Daniel McIntyre for his work in preparing the article on the history of the locomotive from the above named sources.
